INSTRUCTOR:
Dr. Carlos A. Rivera Villarreyes, Head of Support, MIKE Powered by DHI Germany

This one-day, hands-on course provides you with the skills you need for applying FEFLOW for groundwater simulation and addressing issues of mass transport and reactive transport at mine sites. It will cover typical modeling tasks such as flow and transport conceptualization in a variable-saturated media (e.g. mine sites). Moreover, the course offers an introduction to the FEFLOW piChem plug-in for coupling FEFLOW 7.0 and PHREEQC. The course uses specially developed hands-on exercises supported by lectures on theory and relevant practical aspects.

FEFLOW is widely recognized as a most comprehensive software package for subsurface flow and transport simulation. FEFLOW’s unique mesh (structured and unstructured) provides the highest degree of flexibility in all modeling processes at mine sites. The software is used by leading research institutes, universities, consulting firms and government organizations all over the world.

FEFLOW’s scope of application ranges from simple local scale to complex large scale modeling. Application areas include water management, mine water, saltwater intrusion, geothermal energy, and variably saturated media.

COURSE TOPICS:

  • Introduction to FEFLOW and its graphical user interface
  • Conceptualization of mass-transport models
  • Setting up mass-transport models
  • Conceptualization of multi-species transport
  • Overview of coupling FEFLOW—PHREEQC (piChem FEFLOW plug-in)
  • Set-up of unsaturated-flow model for a tailing facility
  • Transport of Acid Mine Drainage (AMD), oxidation of pyrite, etc.
  • Hands-on exercises

TARGET GROUP AND PREREQUISITES:
Mining professionals working on ground water simulation in consulting companies, public authorities, university and research institutions. Participants are expected to have both a basic knowledge about groundwater systems as well as computer application. Prior experience with groundwater modeling is helpful, but not a prerequisite.
