Environmental Geochemistry Workshop
Geochemistry Workshop Instructors:
Connor Newman, Hydrogeologist, Nevada Division of Environmental Protection; Braden Hanna, Senior Geochemist, Itasca Denver, Inc., based out of Lakewood, Colorado; Sam Billin, President of Linkan Engineering, based out of Elko, Nevada
Environmental geochemistry is the study of the chemical composition of groundwater and surface water, and the processes that control water quality. An understanding of these processes is an essential tool in many resource or environmental investigations. This workshop will provide attendees with an overview of aqueous geochemical principles, as well as examples of real-world applications. Topics will include: fundamentals of dissolved ions and their interactions; common techniques of water sample collection and analysis; environmental tracers; groundwater treatment and remediation; regulatory aspects; geochemical modeling; and applications of geochemistry in different industries (mining, oil and gas, etc.).
Recommended Background Knowledge:
It is recommended that attendees have taken some type of introductory course in chemistry in the past, such as a high school or college level course. An understanding of geology and hydrogeology would be helpful. No hands-on or job experience is required.
